The art of online applications

Do you sometimes feel that your online job applications have disappeared into thin air?

Job seekers often express frustration with online application systems because they do not receive replies.  At Employment Edge, we take the time to review and respond to every online application that we receive. Here are some tips for creating an excellent online application.

  1. Match your skills to the job description.  If you have the qualifications for a position, be sure that your responses and your resume clearly indicate how you are a good match. Advertised positions may look interesting and appealing, but if you don’t have the experience or the skill, don’t apply.

  2. Follow directions.  Employment Edge posts job openings on several different job boards. Each has specific directions for responding. Some sites ask for a resume; others require you to complete an application form. In some cases, we ask that you apply in person at our office. Be sure you read and follow the “how to apply” instructions.

  3. Use a simple, readable format for your resume. We can accept Word documents or PDFs. Don’t worry about fancy paper, clever fonts, or graphics. Avoid resume templates and create your own. Be sure to update your information. If your job history leaves off several months to a few years ago, we’ll wonder what you have been doing in the meantime.

  4. Use spellcheck. Check carefully to be sure you are not submitting forms or documents that have spelling or grammatical errors.

  5. Include an e-mail address. We respond to online applicants by e-mail. If you submit an application to Employment Edge and don’t hear back from us within a week, call to see if we received your application. (Sometimes online documents really do disappear into thin air.)

  6. Get back to us. If you don’t qualify for a position, we will let you know and will offer to work with you to find more suitable opportunities. If you do qualify for a position, we will e-mail you and invite you to come for an in-person interview. Watch for our reply and follow up. Even though your online application may be exceptional, we still want to meet you and interview you in person.

  7. Keep track of where you have applied and what you have applied for. We know that job seekers are following lots of leads. Organize your job search by keeping a log of applications — company name, job title, date you applied, and any other pertinent information.

  8. Sign up for our Job Alerts. If Employment Edge doesn’t have a placement for you right away, don’t give up. Fill out the subscription form and we will send postings directly to your e-mail inbox.

In short, keep three thoughts in mind when you submit online applications:

  • match your skills to postings
  • follow directions
  • follow up.

Once you have mastered the art of online applications, you should enjoy an increase in your response rate.

Take a look at our current postings and our easy online application form. We will be happy to help you with your job search.
