Thoughts on workforce development

Jodi Schwan, editor of the Sioux Falls Business Journal, recently visited with members of the Sioux Falls Rotary Club to hear their thoughts on workforce development. With an unemployment rate hovering around three percent, workforce development is being discussed in numerous settings.

Members of the Rotary Club suggested various ways to increase interest in the trades as a career path. Ideas included bringing business people into the schools to talk about occupations, having students tour various workplaces, encouraging trade unions to certify students in occupational skills, and having companies sponsor students' education in return for a certain amount of time working after graduation.

Along with an emphasis on the trades as a career path, other workforce development ideas included tapping retirees who choose to continue working, offering schedules for part-time workers, and benefiting from the professional skills of newcomers to the country.

According to Schwan's article, workforce development involves "a willingness to think differently and to be open to using human resources in new and maybe untested ways."
